The Summit at Surprise, a gathering of elected and Congressional delegates from around Arizona slated for August, has been postponed, according to Surprise Mayor Lyn Truitt.
“Unfortunately, some of the Congressional representatives planning to attend have informed us that developments have caused their calendars to change, and they will not be able to be in Surprise on Aug. 12,” Truitt said in a message to Summit invitees. “I am respectful of the complexities and challenges our federal officials face, and I understand how these demands can require them to change their plans.”
Truitt added that the aim of the Summit, the exchange of ideas between Arizona elected officials and their federal colleagues in a unique moderated forum, cannot be adequately realized at this time. “Therefore, I am postponing the Summit until such time as it is possible to achieve fuller participation,” he said. No new date has been set.
Sixty communities from around Arizona had pledged to attend, and Gov. Jan Brewer had also RSVP’ed, as had Arizona tribal and legislative leaders, according to Surprise officials.
“Although we will not be meeting in August, the enthusiasm about the Summit idea is exciting,” Truitt said. “Clearly there is momentum for finding new ways to share ideas with our federal representative about the challenges we face, such as the economy, immigration, education, water and the environment.”
The Surprise City Manager’s Office said Reps. Trent Franks, Gabrielle Giffords, Ann Kirkpatrick and Raul Grijalva had planned to attend but that Grijalva and Kirkpatrick had withdrawn in recent days due to schedule conflicts.
